In the summer of 1992, everything John Whalen thought his life was going to be, simply disappeared overnight.

He was twenty-one years old. and found himself packing a bag and getting on a plane, all alone.

As he tried to make sense of his new life, he found himself writing letters home.

The Cod Moratorium Collection is three letters from John, plus a BONUS letter - tucked into kraft envelopes, tied together with twine, each one carrying something small and carefully chosen that he wanted the people he loved to have.

Some things you send because you have to.  Some things you send because you can't say them out loud.

Tales from The Rock — for anyone who carries Newfoundland in their heart

Included in the Collection:

  • Three letters from John, printed on premium linen paper

  • A hand-chosen keepsake tucked inside each letter — meaningful and faithful to his story, here are a few of the things you'll find:

  • John's recreated Air Canada boarding pass — tucked into his first letter, because it was something momentous enough to save

  • A recipe he discovered and loved  and it made him think of how much he missed the family

  • Finally, a BONUS letter — a special letter that John wrote to his younger brother and sister,  with something small and personal for each of them

Every collection is carefully curated by hand,
and ready to keep or give away!

This is not a story about policy or politics.

It is a story about feeling forced to leave your family before you were ready.

For those who lived through it... it will feel familiar.
For those who didn’t... it offers something just as important - understanding.
